English Harbour Madeira Cask Finish is the most unexpected and genuinely surprising expression in the Antigua Distillery's small-batch cask finish series — a rum that takes the island's signature spirit in a direction nobody saw coming. Starting with the English Harbour 5 Year Old aged in ex-bourbon American oak casks, the rum is then finished for three to six months in a combination of Malmsey and Bual Madeira casks — the two sweetest styles of Madeira wine from the Portuguese archipelago, adding a rich dried fruit and caramel complexity that distinguishes this expression clearly from the Port and Sherry Cask siblings. The Madeira connection runs deep — the founders of Antigua Distillery Limited had Portuguese roots, making the use of Portuguese wine casks a genuinely personal tribute rather than just a stylistic choice. The color is a beautiful medium copper-amber with rich red highlights, while the nose opens with raisin, prune, orange, molasses, caramel, and a little tobacco — creamy and inviting. The palate is creamy from the first sip with coffee, dry chocolate, allspice, tobacco, and a subtle grape note from the Madeira influence winding through everything, finishing with roasted nuts, warm spice, and a lingering dried fruit character. Bottled at 46% ABV, non-chill filtered — considerably more complex than the standard 5 Year Old it starts from.
